Devotion in Motion Island Style/Halau Hula O Kanoelani, a Polynesian dance school whose name translates to “Hula School of the Heavenly Mist”, is passionate about its mission to “Share the Spirit of Aloha”. Based in Quartz Hill, California, this Halau celebrates the music and dance of the Pacific islands.
Under the direction of Lia Kamminga, this school of over 50 “haumana” or students from 4 to 70 years old—male and female—has the characteristics and traits of a “traditional” hula school—a “Kumu” or teacher; instruction in the dances, languages, and customs of the Polynesian islands; and the use of island instruments and implements. An additional—and somewhat unusual—signature trait of this Halau is its intense patriotism which is demonstrated in honoring military service people and veterans at various homes, functions, and events. Haumana have performed in the Antelope Valley, on the mainland, and abroad for over 30 years.
Devotion in Motion Island Style/Halau Hula O Kanoelani, is the training ground for students, performers, and anyone else looking for a fun way to exercise, learn the culture of the islands, and share Aloha. There are no limitations on age or abilities. The Polynesian dance forms are a way of sharing everyday life, legends, genealogies, nature and, of course—Love.
Audiences are treated to authentic dance, music, and costumes of Hawai’i, Tahiti, Samoa and New Zealand (Aotearoa). The presentations are entertaining and educational as “Auntie Lia” takes you on a journey through Polynesia.
