Hālau Hula Nā Mele o ke Kai provides weekly programs of instruction for females and males, ages 4 and up, along the Central Coast of California. We learn and dance both Kahiko (ancient) and 'auana (modern) hula.
Our hālau hula is dedicated to helping preserve and perpetuate the richness of the Hawaiian culture, especially through the traditions and artistry of hula. Based in San Luis Obispo our hālau has served the California central coast since 1995. Kumu hula Sylvia Ke’alalaua’eokalani Hambly is the artistic director and instructor for all classes.
Kumu Sylvia is privileged to be a student who continues to study under Kawaikapuokalani Hewett and who has participated in the Hawaiian hula graduation custom of ūniki. It is her kuleana (responsibility), to share the knowledge of hula passed down from her hula ancestors. The ancient, traditional dances of the Hawaiian islands were taught in a manner consistent with the teaching of kumu hula for centuries.
The accomplished dancers and musicians of Na Mele o ke Kai perform at luaus, parties, weddings, fundraisers and cultural events. Come join our ohana!
